Oct 22 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities saw another day of sharp declines Thursday with the MSCI Asia Pac ex Pacific index down around 2.9% by late afternoon. Some very steep declines in technology-leaning benchmarks in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan's Nikkei 225 while the Hang Seng fell to near its YTD low. More modest falls for the Topix, Australia, India and Singapore. Mainland China benchmarks also down sharply as they near a bear market. Some minor gains for Southeast Asia. US futures lower, Europe opened with sharp losses. US dollar weaker, yen stronger but other Asia currencies mixed. Treasury and JGB yields lower. Crude oil futures higher again, Brent at $111/b. Precious metals lower, industrial metals weak as iron ore hits a four-year low and copper a more than month-long low. Cryptocurrencies down.

    • The AI trade back under severe pressure today following a weaker-than-expected earnings forecast from Lam Research triggered another wave of selling among AI-related names, and sent Nasdaq futures tumbling. Additional pressure coming from Tesla's capex downgrade while in non-tech developments, Brent crude rose to above $112/bl and the dollar declined amid reports US and Israel were preparing fresh attacks on Iran for after the US mid-term elections.

    • Few other developments today to change the narrative. The Bank of Korea kept its base interest rate steady as it waited to assess the impact of consecutive hikes over the summer but warned another hike was probable as inflation was likely to stay above target for a 'considerable' time. The Philippine central bank raised its base rate 50 bps to 5.5% against expectations of a 25 bps hike to stem inflation pressures. New Zealand inflation eased slightly but a RBNZ rate hike is still likely as domestic inflation proved sticky.

    • Huawei (+HUAWEI) has secured a $2.3B offshore loan from Chinese banks as spending on chips to power AI projects soars. Noetix Robotics (+NOETIX.HK) has filed confidentially for a Hong Kong IPO that could raise several hundred million dollars, according to a Bloomberg report. Fortescue (FMG.AU) said the standoff with China's state-owned iron ore buyer over could negatively affect full-year results. Lotte Corp (004990.KS) posted its 'value-up' plan but maintained its shareholder return ratio at 35% 'or higher' for three years starting in 2027. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) are modernizing their China plants for more advanced chips, according to Reuters.
