  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed higher and near the best levels of the session. Follows last week's selloff. Travel & Leisure, Industrial Goods & Services and Banks were the best performing sectors. Media, Food & Beverage and Chemicals lagged.

    • European equity markets stabilizing after recent weakness. Pullback in oil prices and steadying bond yields helping sentiment. French bond markets still in focus after 10-year hit 5% for the first time since 2002 last week. Sentiment improving after Moody's decision to leave credit rating at Aa3 and maintain negative outlook in rating update after Friday's close. Central bank decisions also in focus with Fed and ECB updates this week. German press reported that German Chancellor Merz met Knot and and de Cos, who are favorites to replace President Lagarde.

    • UK press evaluates potential policies in Wednesday's UK Budget. Weekend reports said Chancellor Healey will take advantage of flexibility in investment rules and give National Wealth Fund and state lender total of £20.4B.

    • On macro data front, German Ifo business climate unexpectedly improved for sixth consecutive month. CBI Distributive Trade surprising on the upside despite weak ONS retail sales update on Friday and soft consumer confidence surveys.

    • On the reporting front, Galp Energia (GALP.PL), Plus500 (PLUS.LN), PostNL (PNL.NA) and Computacenter (CCC.LN) were among few other names updating investors this morning; of note, Borr Drilling (BORR.NO) issued updates after its Prospector 5 drilling rig sank. In M&A news, Frasers Group (FRAS.LN) passed the 50% threshold in Boss, whilst the FT reported that Kone (KNEBV.FH KNEBV.FH) is seeking to retain TK Elevator operations in Spain and Portugal; of note, Galp Energia SGPS and Moeve confirmed they ended negotiations on a potential downstream combination.
