  • Synopsis:

    • European indices ended in positive territory, except for UK and Norway. On the macro-front, French consumer confidence recorded the weakest level for 13 years in October at 80 versus consensus 85 and prior 85 revised from 86. Was lowest level since July 2013. Insee highlighted that households' opinion regarding personal financial situation deteriorated, opportunity to save fell and major purchase intentions fell sharply. Measures of consumers' assessment of living standards hit lowest since survey began in 1972. Economic backdrop has deteriorated significantly since September amid fiscal worries, which saw 10-year French bond yields hit highest level since 2002 last week. In additions, concerns over ability to push through policies to consolidate finances and reforms also exacerbated by civil unrest. Bloomberg noted that latest data does not fully reflect impact of upheaval, with most of the survey responses collected before. President Macron has offered concessions to try to end the protests, but student leaders vowing to continue. In the UK, focus on tomorrow's Budget. Chancellor Healey will remove import taxes on 100 products used by families to tackle cost of living. Will also end so-called cliff edge for those receiving carer's allowance payments and higher tax-free mileage payments will be made permanent. Will push ahead with increase in alcohol duty and freeze on fuel duty will be extended for another year, as expected (Telegraph). The London Times reported that national living wage will increase by 3.9% for those 21 and over but ends manifesto pledge to bring minimum for those under 21 in line with living wage. Forms part of plan to tackle youth unemployment.
