Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Japan and South Korea, mild initial gain in Hong Kong. Nasdaq futures down sharply afterhours amid post-earnings selloff in AMZN, INTC. Australian bonds rallying after Treasury yield curve bull steepened overnight. FX markets steady after dollar strengthened against majors. Crude advancing amid ongoing expectation of kinetic activity in Iran. Gold flat and silver adding to earlier losses. Bitcoin extending down to mid-September low.
BOJ widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at Friday's policy meeting. Outlook Report expected to declare underlying inflation has effectively reached 2% target, with such a language change seen reinforcing expectations for further rate hikes. Market-implied odds of a December move remain high. Ahead of the meeting Tokyo core inflation eased in-line with expectations though remains well above 2% target.
Negative leads for Asian AI stocks from latest batch of US tech earnings. AMZN down 7% afterhours with capex the initial focus of earnings after Q3 investment came in far ahead of expectations and drove sharply negative FCF. Guidance also underwhelmed. INTC down more than 20% with forecast earnings weighed down by slump in PC segment. Israel factory shutdown to also reduce revenue over coming quarters and weigh on margins. Comes after AI trade came under pressure overnight amid record drop in GOOGL.
