  • Synopsis:

    • Asia stocks volatile again Thursday and ended mixed. The MSCI Asia Pac ex Japan index was down around 1.1% although off its lows, with steep falls in South Korea and Taiwan stocks offset by a sharp gain in Hong Kong. Japan's Nikkei 225 was lower but the Topix ended higher. Mainland China stocks rallied, Australia led sharply higher by miners, New Zealand closed at a record high. India outperforming again and near a six-month high, Southeast Asia mostly higher. Dow futures higher but S&P500 and Nasdaq contracts are lower; Europe opened with small gains. US dollar lower, NZD and AUD higher, yen notably stronger although off its highs. Treasuries mixed, JGB and other sovereign bond yields lower. Crude oil futures steady following overnight declines. Gold and other precious metals sharply higher, base metals mixed.

    • Asia stocks were volatile for a second day Thursday post the Democrat sweep in the US mid-term elections, as investors fretted over potential roadblocks in the AI buildout given victories by anti-data center governors and several senators. Nasdaq futures continue to trend lower while tech stocks throughout Asia fell sharply. Kioxia (285A.JP) fell more than 13%, Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) fell 7.6% and SK Hynix (000660.KS) 9.5% while there were sharp declines in Taiwan's tech sector too that took the Taiex to a three-month low. In contrast, Hong Kong's IT and consumer stocks surged as the rotation trade gathered pace.

    • Supporting this, Brent crude prices sank overnight with Brent trading below $95/bl on hopes the new US legislature would lead to meaningful Gulf peace talks, and as Tehran opened the Strait of Hormuz to Asia-registered tanker traffic. This provided firm support for Southeast Asia and India benchmarks, the latter of which is up 6.0% this week.

    • In other developments, September BOJ meeting minutes showed support for continuing rate hikes. Japan final services PMI was softer than the flash reading though activity still firmed from September. Japan's 10Y bond auction drew weaker demand than last month's sale. Malaysia's central bank kept its base interest policy on hold as expected by majority of economists. Indonesia Q3 GDP expanded by a higher than expected 5.7%, despite a sharp decline in government spending.

    • Toyota Motor (7303.JP) raised its FY profit forecast by 15% on strong demand for hybrid vehicles and increased shareholder returns; stock ended sharply higher. China has blocked SoftBank's (9984.JP) $5.4B acquisition of ABB's robotics division in a surprise move that could weaken the company's ambitions of developing physical AI. NextDC (NXT.AU) said private equity groups Goodman and Digital Realty were building stakes in the company; shares sharply higher. China-based chipmaker YMTC (+YMTC.CH) has paused on its IPO amid recent market weakness, according to a Reuters report.
